Students are taught history in mixed ability groups and have two lessons a week in Years 7 and 8. We cover topics as diverse as the build-up of the Roman Empire to the Crusades and the Black Death in the medieval world in Year 7 and the execution of Charles 1, the slave trade, trench life in WW1 and the Windrush in Year 8.

Students can then opt for a History Focus course in Year 9 that further helps prepare them for the skills they need at GCSE and beyond. Year 9 have three lessons a week and their syllabus covers crime and punishment over time, ‘historical controversies’ such as the moon landings and the sinking of the Titanic and a study of how significant figures from history have been interpreted over time.

KS4

This course will include units covering Historical Controversies, Crime and Punishment Through Time and a depth-study of Genocide in the 20th Century. Studying these will aid the development of skills required in the GCSE exams. The inclusion of some project and field work also allows for independent and collaborative research tasks which will further assist students progressing on to A level.

History is the process of looking at available information about the past in order to better understand the complexities of our present. Through analysing sources, you will build up an interpretation of the significance of interrelated factors that have shaped the world we live in today and give you a better understanding of our place within it. The course has been designed to develop your ability to analyse the interpretations and arguments of historians, along with considering the provenance of historical sources. These skills are not only essential to History, but are transferable across many professions and highly prized by employers.
