Championship sailor Ellie Rush has been selected for the GB Youth Performance Squad – another major step forward in her bid to become an Olympic hopeful.
Year 12 Ellie, who sails a single hander RS Aero and a double hander 420, was one of just eight sailors to be selected for the Youth Squad 420 winter 2020/2021 – recognised as being the top squad for youth sailing – after a selection event in September.
At that same event she also claimed the U17 420 Ladies Champion title, which followed hot on the heels of a win in the RS Aero Nationals in Eastbourne in August, where she took top spot in the Youth Ladies competition.
A letter from British Youth Sailing Team said: “Ellie’s selection establishes her status as a British Youth Sailing sailor who we hope will represent Great Britain at major international events in the forthcoming years.”
Now classed as a member of an elite sport, Ellie will be able to continue her training schedule throughout the pandemic, even if the UK goes into another national lockdown.
The dedicated 16-year-old will take part in one weekend training camp a month, where she will have access to more direct training and feedback from the sport’s top coaches.
Ellie, who has been sailing since the age of eight and was awarded the Academy Sports Personality of the Year accolade in December, says she will also continue to train at her home club in Hoveringham.
She says the ultimate aim will be to keep training and improving with an eye on being selected for the British Sailing Team and their Olympic Development programmes.
