SIXTH FORMER Luke Duffy had an amazing summer, returning from the Bahamas as a Commonwealth medal winner, only to collect some outstanding GCSE results.
Luke collected a bronze medal in the 1,500 metres at the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas in July and said he was delighted for the opportunity to race for his country.
“Going to the Commonwealth Youth Games was unreal. I set is as my main target for this year. The whole thing was just amazing, including wearing the kit, with the England logo, which I had dreamed of representing.
“Crossing the line knowing I had won a medal for my country….was just indescribable.”
Just a few weeks later Luke was back at Carlton le Willows to collect his GCSE results, delighted to find he had secured a 9 – the highest possible grade – in English Language, two 8s (in English Literature and Maths), A* in Science, and two As in drama and sport science. This adds to another three A grades from last year to make a total of nine quality GCSEs.
And the accolades didn’t stop there, for in September Luke was crowned UK School Games Champion – for the second year running - after representing the north of England in the national championship. In fact in 2017 alone Luke has won a silver and indoor gold medal at the England U17s Championships and gold in both the Nottinghamshire County and Schools Cross Country.
Luke, who trains six times a week (more than 10 hours in total) is now juggling his world champion aspirations with full time studies for Biology, Maths and English literature A levels in Sixth Form.
Based on recent performances he is hopeful of making his Senior England debut in European competition in January and to be selected for the World Juniors in Finland in summer 2018. Good luck Luke.
