Carlton le Willows Academy

Nothing but the best

Parent Teacher Association

As a parent or carer of a child who attends Carlton le Willows you are already a member of the PTA, so get involved.

The PTA is an important part of any school. We work alongside the staff to build a relationship between the school and the parents, while at the same time furthering our interest in the education of our children.

Meetings are usually held once a term – on a Tuesday at 7pm in West building and usually last around an hour. Deputy Headteacher Mr Turner usually attends all meetings (representing the headteacher Mr Weaver) and we often have presentations from teachers or students about trips and activities.

The main activities of the PTA are threefold:

  •  We raise funds for the benefit of students
  • We support school events, by selling refreshments, raffle tickets, revision guides and more
  • We gain an insight into the education of our children

The PTA has been very successful at fundraising in the past. All the money we raise is spent to ensure the school is equipped to give our children the best education possible and to ensure that the school is able to nurture the strengths and talents of each and every child. Decisions as to where the money is spent lie with the PTA, in response to bids from the Heads of Department and in consultation with Mr Weaver.

In the last year, the PTA has helped to fund:

*table tennis equipment

*balances for science

*  school football kits

* theatre funding

* individual bids from various students for hockey and basketball funding.

In previous years, the PTA has bought:

* two pianos

* a laptop and software for the special needs department

*  a printing press for the art department

* sports kits for school teams

* software for the language department.

If you have any questions about the PTA or cannot attend meetings, but would still like to support us, then please email pta@clwacademy.co.uk

PTA Meetings 2020/2021

PTA meeting dates for the academic year 2020/2021 will be set at the Annual General Meeting due later this term.

Meet the Team

Claire (Secretary)

I have a son who started at Carlton le Willows in September 2018 and have been a member of CLW PTA since then. I have only been Secretary since September 2019 and it is my first-time in this sort of role so I am on quite a steep learning curve, but I aim to give it 100% effort! I really want to be able to support the Chair, Treasurer and fellow PTA members!  I have a background in Graphic Designer/Web Developing for the Civil Service (British Geological Survey) and so I am quite creative. I enjoy festivals, karate, and riding my motorbike!

Andy (Treasurer)

I joined the PTA in September 2017 and became Treasurer in May 2018.  Since becoming Treasurer, we’ve set up online banking (to save costs and for convenience), and replaced the PTA constitution to make it relevant (the previous one was from 1986, long before the school was even an Academy). We’ve run a couple of big fund-raising events attended by parents and the local community, as well as the lottery and other minor activities to boost income. I am also keen to make the PTA relevant to parents, guardians and carers; it’s not all about the money – it’s also a fun and supportive association (but as Treasurer, its mostly about the money!).  I have a background in I.T. and management consultancy, and run my own business with clients in the utility industry. Since the children came into my life I’d forgotten what spare time was, but as they are growing up and becoming more independent, I have time for the PTA, and race marshalling at Donington Park. I have two children at the Academy, my daughter joining in 2017 and son in 2018.

Sara (Chair)

Hi. I’m Sara and have a daughter who started at Carlton le Willows in September 2017. I’ve been Chair of the PTA since April 2019, although new to the world of PTA before then.  I’m really keen to continue to build links with the school, parents/carers and pupils to identify the best way of raising money for the school and adding value to the children’s education and overall experience.  With the PTA team, we launched a presence on social media, in September 2019 ran the annual New Parents’ Welcome, up-dated the content of the website, and promoted a PTA logo competition for the pupils and published a strap-line (PTA – supporting our school community).  I regularly write a termly governor report and article for the Willows magazine and with the rest of the team, serve refreshments at as many parents’ evenings and other school events as we can staff.  In November 2019, we surveyed parents/carers to seek their views on what they want from the PTA and canvas them for ideas, which we’ll analyse and develop in the coming months (and even years!) as we keep this survey open all year round.  In the Autumn Term of 2019, we have revised and relaunched the staff bid system (so that all staff can better access applying for our funds) and met with the School Council to listen to the “student voice”, to hear first-hand their ideas on fundraising and what they thought the PTA could fund.  Beyond the PTA, I’ve worked in higher education for over 30 years and been in student support for half of that time. I’m also Vice Chair of the CLW governing body. When not parenting, working, PTA’ing or governing, I like to go to the theatre and I’m in a reading group.

Are You Being Served?

Following feedback from parents, the PTA was delighted to provide refreshments at events and parents’ evenings throughout the last year.  Once in-school parents' evenings return we aim to continue selling a selection of drinks, cakes and biscuits to keep you going as you walk round meeting all the teachers, but that will obviously be subject to Government guidance at the time.

Race Night

The PTA Race Night held on 19th February was thoroughly enjoyed by all those who participated. Although attendance was lower than we had hoped, the event still raised just over £290, which will directly benefit students at the Academy.

With amusing race commentary,  wines and beers at reasonable prices, amazing raffle prizes, and crazy antics from some of the punters, the evening proved highly entertaining.

We would like to say a BIG thank you to all our sponsors:

  • Frank Key Builders Merchants, who sponsored the whole event
  • Plains Fish Bar, Mapperley
  • Innovative Bathroom and Kitchen Solutions, Bulwell
  • Morrisons, Netherfield
  • Co-op, Netherfield
  • Co-op, Burton Joyce

and also to those who donated prizes for the raffle: Banyan Tree, Arnold; Theatre Royal, Nottingham; Teamsport Go-karting, Netherfield; Nottingham Express Transit (The Tram); Red Lion, Thurgaton; The Nelson, Burton Joyce; Force 10 Paintballing, Bilsthorpe and DNA Fitness, Gedling.

The PTA would especially like to thank the Cookery and DT departments, Reprographics, Dawn Richardson and the on-site team for their support.

We’re looking forward to more events in the coming year, so watch out for the publicity. If you want to help with events like this, or want to influence the work of the PTA (what we do, or how we spend the money raised), feel free to come along to the AGM on 30th April, or any future meeting. Or just come along to the events and have fun.

Forthcoming events

CANCELLED - due to exceptional circumstances

The Absolutely Fabulous CLW PTA Fashion Show and Shopping Event is booked for Wednesday 1 April 2020. 7pm for a 7.30pm start in West Hall.

The clothing on offer is considerably cheaper than you would find in store, with discounts of up to 75% off the high street price. It’s a fool-proof route to a bargain.

There will also be a raffle on the night (prizes to be confirmed), refreshments and licensed bar.

Tickets cost £5 (minimum age 15) and are available from Carlton le Willows West reception, online at PTA-EVENTS.CO.UK/CLWACADEMY, from Hugo's Kitchen and Rhubarb Cafe in Burton Joyce and Serenity Seven in Carlton.

Ticket sales go to Carlton le Willows PTA for the benefit of the Academy and its pupils.

Willows Lotto

The major cash contributors are the events we hold and the Willows Lotto - Willows Winners. The Lotto is drawn four times a year and provides an easy way to support the school and at the same time gives you the chance to win some cash.

If we hit our target of 50% of Carlton le Willows families entering the draw, then we can raise £10,000 for PTA funds, with a £500 top prize in the draw. All you need to pay is £5 quarterly and anyone can join, even if you don’t have a child at the school.

A Willows Winners form is available to download so fill it in and return to school ASAP. By joining the lotto you are making a very small investment in your child’s education that will give your family huge returns in the future.
